Interactive Magazine Design
2025 | CMST 311 Advanced Electronic Publishing
For this project, I was given the assignment to recreate 10 pages from a magazine and add interactability.
The magazine I selected for this project was an edition of the Architectural Digest. I loved the array of styles used throughout the magazine and I was inspired by the use of layout tools such as pop-out text and large custom typography to tell stories. My goal in adding animation and interactability was to enhance the design already present rather than write over it and to learn by recreating the pages as to as true of a likeness as possible before adding any personal flare.
To start, I scanned 10 pages from an Architectural Digest magazine and overlayed them on 10 blank pages in Adobe InDesign.
I placed all of my own elements over the magazine scans to create the proper proportions and searched WhatTheFont for each font style used in the scans. When the right font was not available for use, I found similar fonts and changed their kerning, height, and sometimes paths after outlining them. I reverse-image-searched the photos used on each page and found high quality,
web ready versions.
In InDesign I added animated text effects. I also imported some of the photos into Adobe Photoshop and developed overlay versions of the images for an animated effect. This included lights turning on, canvases changing, objects/people appearing, and more. Finally, I added interactivity through navigation and links to external pages.
This project was a truly enjoyable exercise in understanding layouts, typography, images, animation, Adobe Creative Cloud applications and more.
